This song was inspired by a colleague of mine. She’s breathtakingly lovely, but she has no hobbies and would often spend all of her weekends doing mind-meltingly boring project work because it was the right thing to do. I don’t hold a great work ethic against anyone, even if I don’t have one myself, but jeez, she shoulda been out tearing up the clubs and breaking hearts, fer cryin’ out loud. Fortunately she left the company before I recorded this song so I don’t have to worry about the harassment lawsuit that should have inevitably arisen from it.
I thought I’d stolen the chords from a Santa Cruz guitar monster named Mike Roberto, but he says I didn’t.
Recorded at Terry’s Bones & Knives with Terry on drums and Dale Hymes on bass. I sent the basic tracks off to Jason Loughlin, the country and rockabilly guitar god from Brooklyn, to see if he’d be willing to drop a solo in. Shortly thereafter I got about eight pairs of tracks back from him with a ridiculously complex arrangement of telecaster goodness, which I took happily. Unfortunately, someone (that would be my way of saying, “me”) screwed up the tracks so that they can’t be edited or remixed. This was just meant to be a rough mix that now is the final one because of that. My apologies to all concerned, but I wasn’t going to risk losing these performances by trying to get people to do them over again. Rob Gillette performed miracles on it in mastering.
lyrics
Donna Jean – prettiest girl I ever seen
Donna Jean – she’s captain of the debate team
Donna Jean – I need to teach her how to be a human being
Donna Jean – come on Honey let’s make the scene
Donna Jean let me take you to the dance
Maybe teach you something ‘bout true romance
You gotta get ready for the 4H fair
How did so many curves get to be so square?
Donna Jean – pretty as a picture in a magazine
Donna Jean – she’s my valedictorian dream
Donna Jean – she’s her own grandma at the age of 18
Donna Jean – come on Honey let’s make the scene
Donna Jean let me take you to the show
Don’t know why I bother ‘cause you just say ‘no’
Babe you got it all with your brains and looks
There’s so much you need to learn that ain’t in books
Donna Jean – she’s my little dean’s list queen
Donna Jean – she’s saving herself for Alfred Einsteen
Donna Jean – she takes normal to an extreme
Donna Jean – come on Honey let’s make the scene
Donna Jean let me take you to the prom
You’re too busy working on your atom bomb
There’s more to life than nukular experiments
When you’re old you’ll wonder where the good times went
Donna Jean – she’s all Easter, I’m Halloween
Donna Jean – I’m polluted, she’s so green
Donna Jean – She’s so sweet and I’m so mean
Donna Jean – I’m so funky, she’s so clean
